  • This was not a club it was a visual happening and thus should appreciate that everyone might like to see what the performers are doing. Vertically challenged is a strange description for people, it has no real meaning for a concert. The tall people are just rude and grabby, kind of like those that scramble for the candy out a pinata.

What a total riot! An incredible band, an incredible party, and overall just exactly what my end-of-week called for. Club shows aren’t spectator sports, so I wasn’t bothered about the lack of visibility or the vertically ambitious rockers in the front row. 😉 I was super appreciative of the dance floor, the nice drinks, and all the friendly faces. Thanks UMS!

  • Absolutely true! We would really like to see someone with theater experience set this venue up better or move it elsewhere.

Second what others said: fabulous performance, poorly arranged for seating / viewing. Especially disappointing because of Shara’s great visuals. We were among those who stood on chairs in order to see. But would like to see more edgy performances in this venue, with more thought given to viewing arrangements.

  • Would have been nice to be able to see-interesting how over and over again the tallest people go in front. What is that all about? Fun show, intersting music. way too small a space for the number of people though – raise the stage?

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Gregory Porter at Michigan Theater:

  • Well done… we had a great time – interesting journey through his mind and through a little history – thanks

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Tara Erraught at Hill Auditorium:

  • We left along with several others – while I support emerging artists – this was not what we expected. It would have been a perfect fit for a Sunday afternoon concert at a church hall. It was more like a recital her voice was very well-trained and she was very nice, however, it was not a beautiful tone nor was the repertoire particularly interesting. Just how we felt …. Sorry.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Jason Moran’s Fats Waller Dance Party at Downtown Home and Garden:

  • What is the point of asking for comments if Mark gets defensive about every one of them and instead of listening he responds with “where were you standing because it was perfect from where I stood.” Must be the patrons fault Mark.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Jason Moran’s Fats Waller Dance Party at Downtown Home and Garden:

  • The venue was too small inside for this kind of dance party.
The dance warm up was awkward and strange but she was stunning to watch.
I was extremely disappointed in the band – both singers were not in tune – really strange … – the first piece was ok – the dance duet was lots of fun but, it was all down hill from there. The band was no better than a bar band, repetitive and just not great. What ever possessed UMS to hire this band ? Really expensive for nothing interesting – get it together Ken.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Martha Graham Dance Company at Power Center:

  • Where did the term Perfect Spectator come from please anyone? I heard it mentioned during the introduction but I don’t know the origin of that for it – was it The perfect spectator
    by Graham? or???? Thanks Andra

    Hi andralisa,
Sara Billmann from UMS here. I just wanted to be clear about the choreographers of the three Lamentation Variations, because the variations listed on our website were different than the ones the company performed, and nobody caught the discrepancy between the two until we got your message. Interestingly, the Martha Graham Company has commissioned a whole series of variations, and we only saw a few of them. The program book had the correct listing.

Last night’s variations were by (in order) Larry Keigwin, Richard Move, and Bulareyaung Pagarlava (who did the variation that I think you thought was Lubovitch). Pagarlava is from Taiwan and used to dance with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. There’s an interesting “10 Questions” piece with him here: http://www.4dancers.org/2012/04/10-questions-with-bulareyaung-pagarlava/.

Ah, YOU were the one who told me about seeing Lamentation a number of years ago (no doubt right before you performed my gum surgery last summer!). I couldn’t remember who had spoken so glowingly about it, but it was just stunning. I will confess that I left at intermission so that that would be the lingering vision of the evening, and it’s haunted me all day. Thanks for mentioning it.

  • Interesting how differently people can see/feel things – fascinating really. I too was in the balcony – but i loved everything save for the last piece.

Slow and frankly uninteresting choreography and stifling balcony – not a good combination. Circus possibly appreciable as a period piece but example of surrealistic automatism falling short. Lamentation 2 and 3 were deadly. My second miss with this company. Will not opt for it again.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Martha Graham Dance Company at Power Center:

  • Why does UMS NEVER invite the Lar Lubovitch company, ( one of the choreographers of the piece Lamentation), here? This is a brilliant choreographer with a company that is so well trained they are just stunning – his work represents the joy of dance, of movement and never misses. PLEEEEZZZZ bring them to Ann Arbor

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Martha Graham Dance Company at Power Center:

  • This was possibly the best dance concert I have been to many years. The perfect spectator circus piece just floored me what an interesting piece of choreography, brilliantly danced by all- Lamentaions very moving – beautiful – stunning. Oedipus … Not my favorite – super dated and not great subject matter but very interesting none the less – thanks so much!!
