People Are Talking: UMS presents My Brightest Diamond with Detroit Party Marching Band:

  • What a total riot! An incredible band, an incredible party, and overall just exactly what my end-of-week called for. Club shows aren’t spectator sports, so I wasn’t bothered about the lack of visibility or the vertically ambitious rockers in the front row. 😉 I was super appreciative of the dance floor, the nice drinks, and all the friendly faces. Thanks UMS!

  • French speakers: the mad man clutching his loins while galloping around the “office” environment. What was he saying? Inquiring minds need to know!

  • Long time reader, first time commenter (full disclosure: I work at UMS). The Thursday evening concert was amazing. MTT did an incredible job of encouraging the audience to jump down the rabbit hole with him – he spoke to us directly and wasn’t afraid to dish about the composers (knowing that Lou Harrison built his house out of hay bales honestly made Concerto for Organ with Percussion more enjoyable for me). Anyhow – I definitely felt like Alice traipsing about in a brand new Wonderland. If only every conductor on earth treated orchestral music — contemporary or not — with that same “jump right in, the water’s fine” attitude, perhaps we would see more “young people” (however you choose to quantify that) in the audience. Looking forward to more fantastically weird music this weekend. Like Alice, the first concert only made me curiouser and curiouser….

  • Hi Leon! Truly from UMS here. We checked in with Jun Akimoto about your question and it turns out that the encore piece doesn’t really have a name, per se. The group simply refers to it as “encore piece,” as it is their favorite to perform at the close of an evening. Glad you enjoyed the show!

A truely fantastic performance! My wife and I realy enjoyed it. It was the most energetic show that we have ever seen. We were impressed with not only the music but the unique combination of prower, precision and grace.

Does anyone know the mame of the encore piece?

  • Hi Chitra! Truly from UMS here. Kodo is now on another leg of the tour, but I wanted to draw your attention to a great Michigan-based taiko drumming school, in case you are interested in learning more about this incredible art form. The Great Lakes Taiko Center is located in Novi and offers a variety of classes and workshops for all ages: http://www.michigantaiko.net. Thanks for your questions!

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question. If I may ask, how does the layering of rhythm for a piece worked out? Do you start by conceiving what you want from the final effect, and allocate specific parts to the different drums, or do you start with a basic pattern and then add different elements?
