People Are Talking: UMS presents Kronos Quartet at Power Center:

  • This was a wonderful recital of a quartet – the famous Kronos Quartet – that I have been waiting to hear for a long time. I enjoyed the diversity of works performed as much as I did their mastery of the different pieces.

My only suggestion for UMS and Kronos is please play more!

In all they performed 8pm – 10pm with a half hour intermission to set up “Black Angels”. This is just 90 minutes. Too few minutes for a group that I want to hear more from!

    Thanks

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Takács Quartet at Rackham Auditorium:

  • I, too, felt the commentary prior to Britten String Quartet #3 was most helpful. This music, in contrast to Beethoven or Haydn, is not as easily accessible or understood. The comments help to bridge those gaps and give us insights that we would normally be denied. In many instances the artists need only share several minutes worth of their knowledge, perceptions, etc. to illuminate different aspects of the music to be performed.
Please continue to encourage this commentary and education in any and every way. In this instance, Britten’s third string quartet, I think it really made a difference.
Thanks for the continued diverse and creative programming.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Denis Matsuev at Hill Auditorium:

  • My wife and I loved every moment of Matsuev’s recital. I remembered reading several years ago that Beethoven’s greatness was in his 32 piano sonatas and his 15 string quartets. Listening to the “appassionata” sonata, especially the 2nd movement where you are transported to such a serene place, underscored that assessment of Beethoven.
Can’t wait until the next UMS event, possibly the St. Lawrence String Quartet. Thanks for bringing such wonderful music to Ann Arbor.

  • Glimmers of Light and Dark with the London Philharmonic:

  • My wife and I felt that tonight Tuesday we heard one of the world’s great orchestras in the LPO. We also felt doubly enriched with the programming of modern music, “towards Osiris”, followed up by the classical Mozart’s Violin Concerto #3, and concluded with the romantic Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony. Many thanks to the U.M.S. for another magnificent evening.
