People Are Talking: UMS presents San Francisco Symphony at Hill Auditorium:

  • Sorry. I meant Victrola-looking, not Victoria (the computer thinks it knows best and corrects me).

What is the name of the Victoria-looking instrument? It sounds like wind but doesn’t match the photos I found of “wind machines.”

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Tara Erraught at Hill Auditorium:

  • Although her voice may not be fully mature, she was a joy, a fresh and delightful joy, to watch and listen to. It is too bad that you left at intermission as you might have enjoyed the second half of the program more–more uplifting and fun. She did shine in that gorgeous bright red gown. And cheers for her accompanist!

We left along with several others – while I support emerging artists – this was not what we expected. It would have been a perfect fit for a Sunday afternoon concert at a church hall. It was more like a recital her voice was very well-trained and she was very nice, however, it was not a beautiful tone nor was the repertoire particularly interesting. Just how we felt …. Sorry.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents The Ballet Preljocaj at The Power Center:

  • I really don’t care much for ballet but this sounded really weird so I thought I should go. I will never again say I don’t care for ballet. That death/coma duet left me teary and totally transfixed. The prince and Snow White were so believable and lithe and boneless. It was so beautifully done that I almost didn’t want her to wake up but go on and on. I thought it was a very emotional performance.

I did like the music and thought it enhanced the dance. The acrobatics of the dwarf miners was fun to watch.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Ahmad Jamal at Hill Auditorium:

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this concert. I liked the format of the quartet: piano, bass, drums, and cool percussion with no horns. I liked the intermix of jazz and Latin rhythms. I agree that Hill is not an intimate setting but the acoustics are so perfect that I had no trouble hearing every note and even the whispers from Manolo Badrena. I could listen to James Cammack all night; and I thought he was perfectly miked.
