People Are Talking: UMS presents Brahms’s German Requiem at Hill Auditorium:

  • While I didn’t really enjoy the performance as a whole, I did love when Nadine had her solo. I also heard her before the show and it was really cool to hear her sing at two different perspectives.

After hearing Nadine sing a snippet a little bit before the show, I knew I was in for a treat and I was not let down. The show was phenomenal and breath taking. The dynamic between the singers and the orchestra was great, wish I could see the show again! It was beautiful. Also, loved watching the conductor, I very much admire their creative instruction of the performance.

  • I wasn’t a huge fan of this performance. I am able to appreciate what the performers did, but overall I was just bored. It was a really long show with no breaks. As somebody who does not go to these types of events, it all sounded the same to me. I had no motivation to read along with the words in my program either. The whole show was a blur to me and I couldn’t wait to leave. However, I did love the auditorium. The atmosphere was amazing and the sound was really good. One thing that I thought was really strange, however, was that the second the performers stopped to move to the next movement, the place erupted in coughing. I don’t understand how everybody held them in for so long. It was pretty funny.

  • I agree, the music at times was definitely hard to connect with. I don’t typically listen to jazz or even particularly enjoy it, but I was still entertained by this show. There was a lot of energy and they created a great atmosphere. I do think that the more traditional jazz sections were much easier to listen to, too.

Does practice make perfect? Or does perfect practice make permanent? Either way the musicians that graced the stage Friday night have technical skills that blew my mind. Having good technique is always important, but not when it begins to overwhelm the performance. Without a doubt both Rodriguez and Martinez are immensely talented, but I found it hard to connect to their music. I think this is primarily because I am used to traditional jazz. When I was trying to follow the music and the story each piece was trying to portray, I became lost rhythm and sounds that sounded more like random notes together or individual solos throughout entire pieces. I did enjoy the moments with a more traditional jazz style, we were able to see the musicians shine as true soloist vs. competing with each other to be heard.

  • This was a really fun performance! There was so much energy and excitement throughout and it was very entertaining. I also really love the Michigan Theater and felt like it was a great place to host this performance. From start to finish this show was entertaining and I think it was an excellent addition to the UMS lineup. I’m not even the biggest fan of jazz, but this performance still kept my interest throughout. I like to keep an open mind when it comes to different genres of music, and because of that I was able to enjoy this performance.

  • I agree! It was a very cool show altogether. Throwing the cups at the end was a really cool effect. I also have not seen many dance shows in my life, so this was an eye opener for sure.

I have never attended very many dance performances, and the only one I can remember is The Nutcracker, which I really love, but mostly for Tchaikovsky’s music and not the ballet itself. So going into this show, I was unsure what to expect, and was fairly certain I would not enjoy it. But wow, was I wrong.
I loved the fluidity of this show, and how the actors transitioned from segment to segment. I also was very impressed with how well the dances and choreography matched the music. I found it completely impossible to take my eyes off the dancers. It helped that the music was very interesting.
My favorite part of the show was the second half, and more specifically, when they threw all the cups in the air. I didn’t really sense it coming at all, but when it did happen I was not surprised. To say the least, I was very impressed by this dance company. I would definitely see a show like this again, and I feel this show has opened my mind more to dance in general.

  • This was a really cool show. I’ve never been to anything like this before, so it was new for me. I enjoyed the second half more than the first, but they were both really entertaining. I did feel like there was some sort of story trying to be told during both halves and I didn’t catch on to that. However, it was still enjoyable to watch. I can’t say that I would go out of my way to see this performance again, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth seeing at least once. I would highly recommend it to anybody, even those who don’t particularly enjoy dance.

  • Before this concert, I had never been to a string performance. I knew that it wasn’t going to be super formal, so I came in with an open mind. While I did enjoy the performance as a whole, I honestly think I would prefer a more classical and formal performance. All of the prerecorded sounds and voices were quite distracting to me and a lot of it seemed very repetitive. I found that my favorite pieces were the ones with very minimal or no recorded voices. I was really interested to hear the melodies from the strings but many of the pieces they seemed to only play to accent the prerecorded sounds. The only classical music I know are famous pieces and music from some video games. I can’t remember exactly which piece it was, but one of them reminded me of the game Journey for PS3, which was definitely my favorite one of the concert. It was one of the first ones played. Overall, the concert was enjoyable and was really fun to experience. However, in my opinion, I would rather go to a more traditional classical performance.
