People Are Talking: UMS presents Brahms’s German Requiem at Hill Auditorium:

  • I couldn’t agree more that Hill was an excellent choice of venue for this performance! It really helped acoustically with how many people were packed on that stage! I also appreciated the lyrics being provided. It definitely helped break down some of the language barrier.

I thought that Nadine Sierra was absolutely amazing! My only wish was that she sang more! Before tonight, I had never been to a concert that combined singing with orchestra music. I thought that everything sounded very nice together, and that Hill Auditorium was the perfect space for the performance.

I really appreciated that UMS provided the translations of the lyrics. Even though I did not follow along word for word, I liked being able to read what the song was about because it helped me understand the tone. I attended the Asif Ali Khan concert a couple weeks ago, and I found the language barrier very difficult. Having the translation made it much easier to stay engaged.

  • Last night was incredible! Nadine Sierra did an absolutely amazing job with the soprano solo, the way she makes it look so effortless is astounding! But did anybody else miss the days of high school band and choir after watching that show last night?! I know I did!! The blend, balance, and even the overall acoustics in Hill were wonderful, and to think there were no microphones on anyone that I could see! Overall, the performance was a great experience and I look forward to seeing more works by both groups in the future!

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Alfredo Rodríguez Trio and Pedrito Martinez Group at Michigan Theater:

  • I couldn’t agree more with you! Alfredo gave a truly amazing performance last night that naturally left the audience begging for more. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to capture how remarkable he is on a CD compared to live performance where you can just feel the energy exuding off stage. Hopefully Alfredo comes back to Ann Arbor soon!

With all respect to Pedrito (that is indeed a great performer), Alfredo stole the night.
His whole band is amazing! But he is definitely heading to a genius level. What a privilege to experience his performance – by the way, I bought the CD, but honestly it does not bring the dimension of his quality.

  • What an amazing night!!! Is anybody else still wanting to just stand up and dance from the groove of last night?! Both Alfredo and Pedrito were outstanding performers and I was so excited to get to see them live. You could see the energy on stage, which quickly transferred to the audience. I don’t think anybody in that room could say that the excitement wasn’t flowing with the groove of the music! Some of my favorite moments actually occurred when the music was slowed down to a more sultry jazz because it really gave the performers a moment to shine as soloists and improvisers. Overall, it was a truly amazing night and hopefully both groups will make it back to Ann Arbor soon!

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Compagnie Käfig at Power Center:

  • I couldn’t agree more about their sheer strength and talent as they perfectly navigated through the sea of cups across the stage! It was such an engaging performance and their energy and precision really kept the audience paying attention and on edge waiting to see if anything would go wrong! Overall, I agree that is was an amazing performance by such a strong group of men!

How people can move like that, I will never understand. I was fascinated by the way the men had such strength and control over the movement of their bodies. I loved when they made their own beats because their movements and dancing was already so powerful and fierce that I think music may have detracted from the experience. The simplicity of the group in terms of music and dress really drew great attention to the muscular strength and ability of the dancers. Personally, I appreciated the precision and unity of the movements among the dancers. As a dancer myself, I understand how difficult it is to focus not only on the accuracy and intensity of your own movements, but also keep in tandem with the music as well as the rest of the dancers. With the portion of the performance using the cups, I found myself tensing in my chair anticipating a mistake. What a creative way to display their accuracy and talent! Compagnie Kafig did this exquisitely with physically challenging movements that were the epitome of entertainment.

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Compagnie Käfig at Power Center:

  • Compagnie Kafig was OUTSTANDING! I am new to seeing dance performance, but I can say that I am so glad that they were my first of this type of art form. Just watching them use their bodies as a language between performer and audience was truly incredible. The playful use of cups gave such a light-hearted and animated performance during the second half and really showed off how precise their movements are as they danced, spun, and flipped all around the cup filled stage. Can you even imagine how difficult such a performance would be to put together?! I can barely even make it through an ab workout for 20 minutes and they can seemingly lift themselves into just about any move or position solely using their core. Overall, Compagnie Kafig is truly an amazing group with unmatchable talent!

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Kronos Quartet at Power Center:

  • I attended the Saturday performance of the Kronos String Quartet and let me start by saying that it was very different than I had imagined. I had little knowledge on exactly what type of music I was going to hear, and the layering of digital sound on live performance was quite intriguing. At times, I felt that it was a sensory overload for a novice listener like myself, but a lot of the time it kept me engaged and constantly analyzing who was playing and whether or not the sounds were in the digital background or actually from the players on stage. Also, I really enjoyed the fact that I could easily put a story in my head from such thought provoking music, it seemed as though every song had a real emotional point to get across and I definitely felt a connection and a story being told through the music. Overall, it challenged my listening and ability to adjust to my normal concert going experience, but I learned a lot about my actions as an audience member by attending a concert of a genre that I was unfamiliar with.
